When Escape Isn’t Deliverance: A Reflection on Amos 5:19
“It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him.” — Amos 5:19 (NIV)
Have you ever felt like you escaped one crisis, only to fall right into another?
Amos 5:19 paints a startling picture—one that is disturbingly relatable. A man runs for his life from a lion. He escapes—barely—but just when he thinks he’s safe, he runs into a bear. Somehow, he survives again. He makes it home, exhausted, breathless, relieved. He leans on the wall to catch his breath… and is bitten by a snake.
The image is jarring because it shows us something we often ignore: false security.
In this passage, God was warning Israel that outward religion without inward repentance would not save them. They thought they were safe because they still observed certain religious rituals. But God saw through the motions. Their lives were full of injustice, idolatry, and self-reliance—and their “safety” was an illusion.
The same warning applies to us today.
Sometimes we run from danger or discomfort—bad habits, relationships, financial struggles—only to run headfirst into something else just as destructive. We check off religious boxes. We sing, serve, attend, post Scripture online. But our hearts are still far from God. We feel “safe” because we made it to Sunday service or avoided one mistake. But what about the condition of our soul?
True refuge isn’t found in avoiding trouble.
It’s found in God Himself.
We can’t outrun the chaos of life or the consequences of spiritual disconnection. But we can return to the One who offers more than escape—He offers redemption. God doesn’t want us to just avoid lions and bears. He wants to walk with us through the valley, cleanse our hearts, and give us true rest.
Let this verse be a call to examine:
- Am I truly seeking God or just avoiding pain?
- Is my faith alive or just performance?
- Where do I turn when I feel “safe”?
May we not settle for survival when God is offering revival.
Prayer:
May the Lord, help us not to seek false security in routines or appearances. Search our hearts, and lead us into real relationship with Him. We don’t just want to escape danger—We want to live in God’s presence. Amen.
