The Wisdom of Stewardship – Pay Attention to Your Flock

In a world of fast-paced success and ever-changing financial trends, Proverbs 27:23–24 gives us timeless wisdom: “Know the condition of your flocks.” In ancient times, flocks represented wealth and livelihood. Today, they might represent your business, your household, your spiritual walk, or any area where you’re called to lead and steward.

Scripture:
“Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations.”
— Proverbs 27:23–24 (NIV)

  1. Know What You Have
The first step to wise stewardship is awareness. Whether you’re managing a farm, a business, a ministry, or your personal finances—do you really know what’s going on? Are you tracking progress, paying attention to growth and decline, or just hoping things will work out?

This verse reminds us not to assume all is well, but to check in, review, and engage with what’s ours to manage. You can’t fix what you don’t know is broken.

  1. Careful Attention Is Key
The phrase “give careful attention to your herds” speaks to intentionality. It’s not enough to be aware; we are called to care. That means planning, investing, maintaining, and protecting what God has entrusted to us. This could be your career, your relationships, your ministry, or even your health.

Attention today protects your future. Neglect now leads to crisis later.

  1. Riches Don’t Last Forever
The wisdom of Solomon follows with a sobering truth: “Riches do not endure forever.” Wealth, status, and earthly success are temporary. The “crown” — a symbol of leadership or legacy — is not guaranteed to pass down. That’s why stewardship is urgent. Don’t take today’s abundance for granted.

It’s a call to manage what you have now with the understanding that seasons change. The wise steward prepares for tomorrow—not with fear, but with faith and diligence.

This proverb teaches that good stewardship isn’t optional—it’s vital. Don’t just dream big; manage well. Pay attention to what you have, work with excellence, and honor God with your diligence.

Reflection Questions:

  • What area of your life needs more careful attention right now?
  • Are you managing your “flocks” with wisdom, or letting things slip through the cracks?
  • What can you do today to better steward the resources God has given you?

May this be your and our prayer today. Lord, help me to be a faithful steward of everything You’ve placed in my hands. Open my eyes to what needs attention, and give me the discipline to care for it well. Teach me to value what truly lasts, and to live wisely in every season. Amen.
